Couples Therapy

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy, also known as couples counseling or marriage therapy, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help couples address and resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationships. It is typically conducted by psychologists who are trained to work with couples experiencing various issues in their relationships. Couples therapy aims to create a safe and supportive environment for partners to explore their concerns and  work together to achieve healthier and more satisfying connections.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely practiced and evidence-based therapeutic approach that can be effectively applied in couples therapy. CBT focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress and relationship problems. By applying CBT techniques in couples therapy, individuals and couples can gain insight into their relationship dynamics, learn to address issues more effectively, and ultimately build stronger, healthier relationships. This approach is particularly effective for couples facing conflicts related to communication, trust, intimacy, and various relationship stressors.

First Session

For your first session, both you and your partner will appear together - during the first 10 minutes, your psychologist will review the informed consent document and the practice s policies, and answer any questions you or your partner may have. Afterward, they will spend 50 minutes with both you and your partner (together) to better understand the problems affecting your relationship, and any relevant history that could help your psychologist establish a conceptualization of your relationship dynamic.

Second Session

For your second session, you and your partner will come in separately for an individual session with your psychologist where they will better understand each one of you individually, and go over any information that you would like them to know that you may have not felt comfortable disclosing in your first session.

Third Session

This session is geared towards ironing out a treatment plan with relevant goals that will become the focus of treatment. Your psychologist will overview their approach in assisting you and your partner to achieve your relevant treatment goal(s). At the end, they will work with both you and your partner to identify a feasible time and date for your first therapy appointment going forward.
