Violence Risk Assessment

Understanding Violence Risk Assessment

A violence risk assessment is a specialized forensic evaluation used to determine the likelihood that an individual may engage in future violent behavior. These evaluations support critical decisions in legal, clinical, correctional, workplace, and educational contexts. At Sugar Land Psychological Associates (SLPA), we conduct comprehensive, evidence-informed assessments that distinguish clearly between static risk factors (those that cannot change) and dynamic risk factors (those that can improve or worsen over time). This distinction is essential for fair, accurate, and actionable risk management.

Violence Risk Assessment

Our Approach

1. Structured Evaluation of Static & Dynamic Factors

We distinguish between:

  • Static factors (unchangeable history such as past violence, criminal patterns, long-term traits)

  • Dynamic factors (changeable risks like mental health symptoms, substance use, stress, insight, and treatment engagement)

This breakdown shows both long-term baseline risk and what can be treated, monitored, or stabilized over time.

2. Use of Validated Forensic Tools

We incorporate standardized measures such as:

  • HCR-20 Version 3 for structured violence risk evaluation

  • MMPI-3 for personality and psychopathology

  • Additional tools for aggression, impulsivity, trauma, substance use, or malingering as needed

These instruments support objective, defensible conclusions.

3. Multi-Source Information Gathering

We integrate:

  • Interviews

  • Psychological testing

  • Record review

  • Collateral contacts (when permitted)

This ensures accuracy and avoids relying on any single source of information.

4. Clear, Context-Specific Risk Formulation

We clarify:

  • What types of violence are foreseeable

  • Conditions that increase or reduce risk

  • Which dynamic factors require attention

  • Protective factors that promote stability

Our formulations explain how and when risk may change.

5. Practical, Actionable Recommendations

We provide targeted guidance regarding:

  • Treatment needs

  • Monitoring or supervision

  • Environmental supports

  • Strategies to reduce and manage risk

Why Violence Risk Assessments Matter

  • They help courts and agencies make fair, evidence-based decisions.

  • They highlight both risk and strengths, not just liabilities.

  • They protect public safety while avoiding unnecessary restrictions.

  • They reduce organizational liability by relying on structured, validated methods.

Who Benefits?

  • Courts & Attorneys: bond, sentencing, supervision, and treatment decisions

  • Correctional & Forensic Facilities: classification, programming, re-entry planning

  • Employers & Agencies: threat assessments and safety-sensitive positions

  • Schools & Universities: safety interventions and return-to-campus evaluations

  • Clinicians & Case Managers: targeted treatment planning

How the Process Works:

02
Forensic Assessment
At the start of your evaluation, your psychologist will conduct an in-depth interview to learn about your background and any cognitive or emotional symptoms you’re experiencing. You will also complete specific psychological tests to gather additional data. The overall duration of the assessment depends on your unique situation, but most average between one to three hours. If further questions or extra sessions are required beyond the initial evaluation, your psychologist will notify your attorney.
Report of Findings
After the violence risk assessment is completed, the psychologist will prepare a clear and comprehensive report summarizing the individual’s static and dynamic risk factors, test results, overall risk formulation, and specific recommendations for management or intervention. This report is then sent directly to the referring party—such as the court, attorney, agency, employer, or institution—so they have the information necessary to make informed decisions regarding safety, supervision, or treatment needs. Please note that the individual being evaluated will not receive a copy of this report.
