Kaiya Abamu
Psychological Assistant
Hi, I’m Kaiya Abamu, a Psychological Assistant at Sugar Land Psychological Associates and a graduate student in clinical training, practicing under the supervision of Dr. Derek Ream. I assist the practice’s psychologists with clinical and forensic psychological assessments for adults, supporting comprehensive evaluations that require careful structure, precision, and attention to detail.
I bring experience working in detention and forensic settings, where I contributed to psychological evaluations and co-facilitated DBT-informed, substance use, and aggression-focused groups. These environments strengthened my ability to remain grounded, methodical, and objective when engaging with complex histories, high-stakes referral questions, and emotionally charged material—skills that translate directly into assessment work.
At SLPA, my role centers on supporting psychologists through structured interviewing, test interpretation support, and maintaining evaluation integrity across a range of clinical and forensic referrals. I also have a background in forensic and assessment-focused research, including work examining culturally responsive rehabilitation practices and the clinical utility of commonly used psychological measures such as the MMPI-3. This experience informs a careful, analytical approach to assessment.
My work is focused on contributing to thorough, accurate, and ethically grounded psychological evaluations. I value clarity, consistency, and careful documentation, and I aim to support assessments that are clinically sound and professionally defensible.
