Our People

Mandy Cao, Ph.D., M.S.

Psychology Resident

Hi there! I’m Dr. Mandy Cao, a bilingual (English and Mandarin Chinese) Psychology Resident with Sugar Land Psychological Associates, currently training under the supervision of Dr. Derek Ream. I specialize in psychotherapy and psychological assessment for individuals and couples, using evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), family systems theory, and psychodynamic approaches. I have also completed advanced training toward certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFCT), reflecting my strong commitment to working with relationship dynamics in a deep and meaningful way.

My clinical interests also extend to psychological assessment. Drawing on a solid foundation in statistics and psychometrics, I conduct evaluations to inform diagnosis and treatment planning for a range of concerns including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, dementia, and personality structure.

I was born in Shanghai, China, and raised in a family of educators, which nurtured my early love of learning and helping others grow. My professional journey began in economics and finance and later transitioned into human resource development and international leadership consulting. Over time, my passion for helping others deepened into a commitment to clinical psychology, where I could work more directly with individuals navigating emotional and relational challenges.

For over a decade, I partnered with my husband to design and implement leadership development programs for global organizations throughout Europe and Asia. This work cultivated a deep appreciation for the role of relationships, identity, and culture in personal growth; insights that now inform my therapeutic approach.

My clinical work is also shaped by a longstanding interest in cross-cultural psychology. I’ve explored issues such as business decision-making, personality in organizational contexts, and the mental health impact of racial stereotypes on Asian Americans in the workplace. These experiences have enriched my understanding of the complex interplay between culture, identity, and emotional well-being.

Outside of the practice, I live in Katy with my husband, a former professor and associate dean who now works as a global leadership consultant and marital therapist. In my free time, I enjoy baking, cooking, playing the piano, and gardening. A former neighbor once told me that simply walking past my garden brought her a sense of peace; her words continue to inspire my belief in the healing power of nature and everyday beauty.
