Our People

Mandy Cao, Ph.D., M.S.

Psychology Resident

Hi, I’m Dr. Mandy, a bilingual (English and Mandarin Chinese) Psychology Resident at Sugar Land Psychological Associates. My work is devoted to helping adults and older adults find relief from anxiety, phobias, and depression, and to creating a therapeutic space that feels steady, human, and genuinely supportive.

I was born in Shanghai, China, and my early life was shaped by navigating multiple cultural worlds. Growing up between expectations, identities, and unspoken rules taught me early on what it feels like to quietly manage anxiety, self-doubt, and the pressure to appear composed while feeling unsettled inside. Those experiences continue to shape how I work with clients, with curiosity, humility, and respect for the complexity of emotional life.

Before entering clinical psychology, I worked in organizational and leadership settings, applying psychological principles to motivation, decision-making, and interpersonal dynamics. That experience reinforced how universal emotional struggle is: regardless of success or position, people still wrestle with fear, worry, and self-doubt. It also strengthened my belief that therapy should be a place where people do not have to perform or hold everything together.

In clinical practice, I specialize in anxiety disorders, phobias, and depression. I work with individuals who feel caught in cycles of worry, avoidance, fear, emotional heaviness, or self-criticism, often while continuing to function outwardly in ways that make their struggles easy to miss.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based care and tailored to each person’s goals and pace. I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy to address patterns that maintain anxiety and low mood, along with exposure-based strategies to reduce fear and avoidance in a collaborative, supported way. I also integrate mindfulness-informed and skills-based techniques to strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, and self-compassion, with a focus on practical tools that support meaningful daily change.

My research has focused on the psychological experiences of Asian Americans, including cultural expectations, barriers to mental health care, and workplace stress. This continues to inform my commitment to culturally sensitive care and meeting each person without assumptions or judgment.

Outside of the therapy room, I live in Katy with my husband, a global leadership consultant and marital therapist. I enjoy baking, cooking, playing the piano, and gardening. A former neighbor once shared that simply walking past my garden brought her a sense of peace, a reminder to me of how healing everyday beauty and presence can be.

At the heart of my work is a simple belief: you do not have to be falling apart to deserve support, and you do not have to face anxiety or depression alone. If fear, worry, or low mood has been limiting your ability to feel present, confident, or connected, I would be honored to walk alongside you toward relief, clarity, and meaningful change.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. To make it easier, I offer a free 15-minute video consultation where we can meet, talk about what you’re looking for, and see if we’re a good match.
