Our People

Mandy Cao, Ph.D., M.S.

Psychology Resident

Hi, I’m Dr. Mandy, a bilingual (English and Mandarin Chinese) Psychology Resident at Sugar Land Psychological Associates, where I practice under the supervision of Dr. Derek Ream. My work is devoted to helping adults and older adults find relief from anxiety, phobias, and depression, and to creating a therapeutic space that feels steady, human, and genuinely supportive.

I was born in Shanghai, China, and my early life was shaped by navigating multiple cultural worlds. Growing up between expectations, identities, and unspoken rules taught me early on what it feels like to manage inner experiences quietly, especially anxiety, self-doubt, and the pressure to appear composed on the outside while feeling unsettled inside. These formative experiences continue to inform how I sit with clients today, with curiosity, humility, and respect for the complexity of being human.

Before entering clinical psychology, I spent part of my career applying psychological principles in organizational and leadership settings, helping individuals and teams better understand motivation, decision-making, and interpersonal dynamics. What stood out to me repeatedly was how universal emotional struggle truly is. Regardless of success, intelligence, or position, people experience fear, worry, and self-doubt. That realization continues to shape my clinical perspective and reinforces my belief that therapy should be a place where people do not have to perform or hold it together.

In my clinical work, I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, phobias, and depression. I work with individuals who feel caught in cycles of worry, avoidance, fear, emotional heaviness, or self-criticism, often while continuing to function outwardly in ways that make their struggles easy to miss. I understand how exhausting it can be to carry anxiety silently or to move through life feeling disconnected, unmotivated, or weighed down by depression.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in evidence-based care and tailored to each person’s goals and pace. I primarily draw from cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients identify and shift patterns that maintain anxiety and low mood, along with exposure-based strategies that gently reduce fear and avoidance in a collaborative and supported way. I also integrate mindfulness-informed and skills-based techniques to strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, and self-compassion. My focus is on helping clients develop tools that translate into meaningful, real-world change.

My research background has focused on the psychological experiences of Asian Americans, including the impact of cultural expectations, barriers to mental health care, and workplace stress on emotional well-being. This work has strengthened my commitment to culturally sensitive care and to meeting each person where they are, without assumptions or judgment.

Outside of the therapy room, I live in Katy, Texas with my husband, a global leadership consultant and marital therapist. I enjoy baking, cooking, playing the piano, and gardening. A former neighbor once shared that simply walking past my garden brought her a sense of peace, a moment that continues to remind me of the healing power of everyday beauty and presence.

At the heart of my work is a simple belief that you do not have to be falling apart to deserve support, and you do not have to face anxiety or depression alone. If fear, worry, or low mood has been limiting your ability to feel present, confident, or connected to your life, I would be honored to walk alongside you as you work toward relief, clarity, and meaningful change.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. To make it easier, I offer a free 15-minute video consultation where we can meet, talk about what you’re looking for, and see if we’re a good match.
